Drew League Playoffs kick off with upsets

TThe Drew League playoffs officially kicked off last weekend. There were upsets left and right – teams that were expected to go through didn’t, while other teams that weren’t on the radar rose to the occasion. Saturday was filled with a lot of excitement.

Coming from the team USA game in Vegas the night before where Paul George had a horrible injury, it was understandable that NBA players might not want to continue playing immediately the next day. James Harden and DeMar DeRozan were on the sidelines checking out the action, as well as Dorell Wright. La Familia was missing DeMar, JR Smith and Ron Artest. It hurt them and they took the loss to the Jaguars. Next up was Nick Young’s team – he did play, but without Paul George or Gilbert Arenas, they too fell to Hank’s Houdini’s All-Stars. The next game was a classic rematch of the two teams responsible for the past 5 years of championships – Citi Team Blazers vs The Clozers (formerly LAUNFD) This was an extremely close game but it came down to the Blazers taking the win. Sunday was the next round of playoffs which knocked out most of the teams. The teams left that will compete for the championship are Cheaters 1 vs Houdini’s All-Stars and Cheaters 2 vs COA. You don’t want to miss the final games! It will be great basketball

Drew League Week 09 – Sunday: Brandon Jennings scores 56, Toronto All-Stars join forces, Disney Stars courtside and more!

SSunday was a busy day at the Drew League. The morning started off with Jeff Remington scoring one of the biggest plays of the weekend – in fact it was so big, it made the Sports Center top 10! He has been one of the rising stars this summer, really making a name for himself. Because of Kevin Durant hosting a camp the previous day on the roof of the Drew League, rumors were spreading throughout that he would be playing that day. The line wrapped around the building to get inside. Although it felt like 100 degrees inside the gym, the stars made their way courtside checking out the games. Toronto Raptors stars Terrence Ross, Kyle Lowry and DeMar Derozan were watching the games until their game with La Familia. Disney stars Zendaya and Trevor Jackson were courtside snapping pictures with all of their fans. Dorell Wright made his…

“Ball Up” Street Ball takes over downtown LA

SStreet Ball legends took over the Nokia Live in downtown Los Angeles for an acrobatic display of basketball. Ball Up, formerly known as And-1, is a team of the top street ball players in the country. They travel the world playing against local talent from each city. At the end of each game, one player is chosen from each city to come compete at the final game in Las Vegas at the end of the summer. From there, one player will be chosen to join the Ball Up team and travel the world with them.  They are not only amazing basketball players but awesome people as well! I have worked with Ball Up and many of the players for years and they are really great to be around. The atmosphere at the games is very playful and fun. Many of the NBA rules do not apply, leaving for the creative minds of these ball players to take over – From insane ball handling skills to hanging off the rim after a monster slam dunk.

The opposing team in LA included a lot of local guys who can be seen balling at the Drew League, Venice Beach League and Air West. The celebrity guest coaches of the team were James Harden (Houston Rockets) and Gilbert Arenas (NBA Allstar). The halftime performance included a show from the group LMFAO. Many stars were seen sitting courtside enjoying the game as well!

Ball Up is currently touring the country right now and will be concluding the summer in Las Vegas! Be sure to check out a game when they come to your town. Check out the photo gallery below!

Nike Extravaganza brings out top High School talent

This years Nike Extravaganza was hosted at Mater Dei in Orange County. The tournament brought out the top high school talent around the country, including local talent such as Stanley Johnson (Mater Dei), Jordan McLaughlin (Etiwanda), Daniel Hamilton (Bosco), Tyler Dorsey (Bosco) and the number 1 ranked player in the country, Jahlil Okafor (Whitney Young).

I attended the second day of the 2 day tournament to watch Etiwanda vs St John Bosco.USC commit Jordan McLaughlin was one of the most exciting players to watch the entire tournament.

Jordan had 30 of his 32 points after halftime. He also scored a shot with less than 6 seconds left to take the team into Overtime, in which Etiwanda won. Make sure to check out the episode of Thru The Lens that I filmed for Jordan McLaughlin.

The last game of the night was Whitney Young (Chicago, IL) vs Mater Dei. Seeing two of the top players in the country battle it out was highly anticipated. Mater Dei took control of that game and won. It was a fun tournament and I got to see a lot of basketball talent and some cool shoes!

Under Armour brings “Elite 24” Back to New York

One of the biggest High School basketball events in the country is the Elite 24 hosted by Under Armour. For the past few years, they have taken this tournament to Venice Beach, California. It originated in New York and this was the first year they brought it back. They had a beautiful court built right below the Brooklyn Bridge. The 4-day event was an amazing experience and I am very thankful to have been apart of this wonderful brand. Check out the pictures from each day
