Drew League 2015: Week 04 – Sunday

OOne of the most exciting games today was between BB4L and Pandas. The game was close – going back and forth. With seconds left on the clock, BB4L was up and it looked like a for sure win. The Pandas Ian Pinckney got the ball and threw it across court before time expired – and the shot went in! It was one of the most exciting ways to end the game!! His teammates rushed to him after the game to celebrate. Its moments like those that make basketball so fun to be apart of. Streetball legend, Sik Wit It, was also in attendance playing with Problems. Check out the photo gallery below of the Sunday games!

Drew League Week 09 – Sunday: Brandon Jennings scores 56, Toronto All-Stars join forces, Disney Stars courtside and more!

SSunday was a busy day at the Drew League. The morning started off with Jeff Remington scoring one of the biggest plays of the weekend – in fact it was so big, it made the Sports Center top 10! He has been one of the rising stars this summer, really making a name for himself. Because of Kevin Durant hosting a camp the previous day on the roof of the Drew League, rumors were spreading throughout that he would be playing that day. The line wrapped around the building to get inside. Although it felt like 100 degrees inside the gym, the stars made their way courtside checking out the games. Toronto Raptors stars Terrence Ross, Kyle Lowry and DeMar Derozan were watching the games until their game with La Familia. Disney stars Zendaya and Trevor Jackson were courtside snapping pictures with all of their fans. Dorell Wright made his…

Drew League Week 09 – Saturday

AAfter all of the excitement at the Drew League last weekend, this weekend brought out the long lines and flooded stands. The Monster Matchup of the game included a battle of the number 1 spot – Hank’s Houdini’s All-Stars and Cheaters 1. Both teams are coached by 2 legends in the Drew League – Allen Caveness and Casper Ware Sr. Their teams have dominated because of the teamwork that their players display on the floor. Some teams have a 1-on-1 strategy that is not as effective, but the team chemistry and coaching knowledge of these two teams makes them a great challenge and fun to watch.  Baron Davis, Money Mike and Ekene Ibekwe (Cheaters 1) were key in keeping their team on the right track. Ultimately, Cheaters 1 took the victory 85-76.

Casper Ware Jr. also came out to play with Cheaters 2. Casper won MVP of the Drew League during the NBA lockout in 2011. With scheduling conflicts and summer time activities, a lot of the bigger names weren’t able to make it out to the games Saturday. Check out the photo gallery below!

Air West continues with local talent taking on NBA stars

Last night another Air West run took place in the heart of Los Angeles. One of the Los Angeles basketball players who has been making quite a buzz around the world is Kwame Alexander. Kwame played his first professional year of basketball last year overseas and has come back this summer looking to build an even bigger name for himself. This summer at the Drew League alone, his dunks have gone viral across all sports media outlets. He has been putting on a show at the Venice Beach League, securing the “Player of the Week” more than once. Last weekend he participated in the BET Experience Sprite Slam Dunk contest. Last night he got a chance go to head to head against Denver Nuggets star, Kenneth Faried. Both are known for their size and athletic ability (as well as their dreadlocks). I showed up to take pictures a little after the run had already started but as soon as I walked in, everyone was buzzing about Kwame dunking over Kenneth Faried. I didn’t get the pic, but our good friend Porterhouse LA was there last night and captured the action. Hey, at least Kenneth was playing defense and we know he’s caught his fair share of bodies with the dunks! Elliott Williams from the Philadelphia 76ers was also in the building scoring buckets! Overall it was a fun night, be sure to check out the photo gallery below!

“Ball Up” Street Ball takes over downtown LA

SStreet Ball legends took over the Nokia Live in downtown Los Angeles for an acrobatic display of basketball. Ball Up, formerly known as And-1, is a team of the top street ball players in the country. They travel the world playing against local talent from each city. At the end of each game, one player is chosen from each city to come compete at the final game in Las Vegas at the end of the summer. From there, one player will be chosen to join the Ball Up team and travel the world with them.  They are not only amazing basketball players but awesome people as well! I have worked with Ball Up and many of the players for years and they are really great to be around. The atmosphere at the games is very playful and fun. Many of the NBA rules do not apply, leaving for the creative minds of these ball players to take over – From insane ball handling skills to hanging off the rim after a monster slam dunk.

The opposing team in LA included a lot of local guys who can be seen balling at the Drew League, Venice Beach League and Air West. The celebrity guest coaches of the team were James Harden (Houston Rockets) and Gilbert Arenas (NBA Allstar). The halftime performance included a show from the group LMFAO. Many stars were seen sitting courtside enjoying the game as well!

Ball Up is currently touring the country right now and will be concluding the summer in Las Vegas! Be sure to check out a game when they come to your town. Check out the photo gallery below!
