“Ball Up” Street Ball takes over downtown LA

SStreet Ball legends took over the Nokia Live in downtown Los Angeles for an acrobatic display of basketball. Ball Up, formerly known as And-1, is a team of the top street ball players in the country. They travel the world playing against local talent from each city. At the end of each game, one player is chosen from each city to come compete at the final game in Las Vegas at the end of the summer. From there, one player will be chosen to join the Ball Up team and travel the world with them.  They are not only amazing basketball players but awesome people as well! I have worked with Ball Up and many of the players for years and they are really great to be around. The atmosphere at the games is very playful and fun. Many of the NBA rules do not apply, leaving for the creative minds of these ball players to take over – From insane ball handling skills to hanging off the rim after a monster slam dunk.

The opposing team in LA included a lot of local guys who can be seen balling at the Drew League, Venice Beach League and Air West. The celebrity guest coaches of the team were James Harden (Houston Rockets) and Gilbert Arenas (NBA Allstar). The halftime performance included a show from the group LMFAO. Many stars were seen sitting courtside enjoying the game as well!

Ball Up is currently touring the country right now and will be concluding the summer in Las Vegas! Be sure to check out a game when they come to your town. Check out the photo gallery below!

Clippers return to Staples Center for first time since Donald Sterling ban

ht_clippers_hp_kb_140429_16x9_992

The morning before the game 5 playoff between the Clippers and the Warriors, NBA commissioner Adam Silver announced that Clipper owner Donald Sterling would be fined 2.5 million dollars for his racist statements, along with a lifetime ban from any NBA related activities. Just hours after this news released, I headed down to staples center to see how the atmosphere was at the game. There were many fans outside protesting against Donald Sterling remaining the owner. Because many of the sponsors had also pulled out from working with the Clippers, there was a very different atmosphere – It was quiet and a bit sad before the game started. Before the players came out, we as fans were urged to stand as one and support these Clippers players who are out here fighting for a championship despite all of the controversy. The Clippers stated, “We Are One”. The fans really got up the energy which fed the players throughout the game. As the players continued to play well, it livened up the entire arena – ultimately resulting in a Win for the Clippers. They will be headed to Golden State to play game 6 of the series. Check out the video below for a recap

Cassy Athena takes pictures as an official NBA photographer

One of my dreams was to be a photographer in the NBA. I was given this opportunity by Fox Sports. I not only was documenting the experience of being at a LA Clippers home game, but Fox was also going to document my experience of shooting my first game. I had the most amazing time! I got to Staples Center a few hours before tip-off to make myself familiar with the venue and everything going on. Sitting on the floor under the basket was a surreal experience. Getting to look out at and see thousands of people was amazing. After my nerves calmed down, I felt right at place and in my element of shooting a basketball game. With the help of my friend DeAndre Jordan, I was able to capture one of the coolest pictures I’ve taken of him, Blake and Ronny on the bench. After the game I talked with DeAndre and Blake about my first time shooting a game and they were very supportive and took pictures to be apart of it as well! I look forward to being apart of more NBA events, it was great!

Brandon Jennings presented with painting at Clipper Game

The Milwuakee Bucks were in town playing the LA Clippers. A few months ago I painted Brandon Jennings a birthday gift – a portrait of him. It was also a fun time at the game – including one of the biggest plays of the season – a lob from Jamal Crawford to Blake Griffin dunk!

Clippers host Pumpkin Carving contest for game tickets

Around Halloween last year, Fox Sports West hosted a pumpkin carving contest. I don’t have much experience with carving pumpkins, but I gave it a try and ended up carving a portrait of Blake Griffin on a pumpkin – which ended up winning the contest! My tickets arrived and I headed to Staples Center to watch the Houston Rockets take on the LA Clippers. Overall had a great experience!

John Wall presented with painting

One of my biggest passions is art – everything from digital media to fine arts. I painted a portrait of my friend John Wall from the Washington Wizards. He’s been injured the majority of the season, but luckily 1 week before he came to play in Los Angeles against the Clippers, he returned to the court. When he came to LA, I got to head down to the game and watch him play! Truly a talented basketball player. After the game I gave him the painting and he loved it! Good luck to John!
