“Ball Up” Street Ball takes over downtown LA

SStreet Ball legends took over the Nokia Live in downtown Los Angeles for an acrobatic display of basketball. Ball Up, formerly known as And-1, is a team of the top street ball players in the country. They travel the world playing against local talent from each city. At the end of each game, one player is chosen from each city to come compete at the final game in Las Vegas at the end of the summer. From there, one player will be chosen to join the Ball Up team and travel the world with them.  They are not only amazing basketball players but awesome people as well! I have worked with Ball Up and many of the players for years and they are really great to be around. The atmosphere at the games is very playful and fun. Many of the NBA rules do not apply, leaving for the creative minds of these ball players to take over – From insane ball handling skills to hanging off the rim after a monster slam dunk.

The opposing team in LA included a lot of local guys who can be seen balling at the Drew League, Venice Beach League and Air West. The celebrity guest coaches of the team were James Harden (Houston Rockets) and Gilbert Arenas (NBA Allstar). The halftime performance included a show from the group LMFAO. Many stars were seen sitting courtside enjoying the game as well!

Ball Up is currently touring the country right now and will be concluding the summer in Las Vegas! Be sure to check out a game when they come to your town. Check out the photo gallery below!

BET Experience hosts insane slam dunk contest!!

SSunday at the BET experience included more basketball action inside the convention center – this time it included some of the best dunkers in the world. Sprite brought out the best dunkers to go face to face in a crazy slam dunk contest. Two of the craziest dunks of the contest included Guy Dupuy aka Frequent Flyer from France dunking over 6 people! To make things even crazier, Haneef Munir aka Young Hollywood made the crowd go wild! I am very familiar with Young Hollywood and his dunks – if you recall, last year the the 5’10” high flyer dunked over Blake Griffin in a glow-in-the-dark dunk spectacular. This time he brought out a female wearing heels to dunk over. To make it even crazier, he had her stand on a chair! After 2 failed attempts, the people running the show said due to time limitations they had to move on. The crowd was anticipating seeing this dunk go through and with the pressure of the fans, they agreed to let him have another go at it. He came through in an AMAZING dunk! By far one of the best dunks I’ve seen to date.

The contest rules were very unorganized. It had been an elimination process up until this point, leaving just Young Hollywood and Frequent Flyer. Out of no where, they said they want to have a dunk off and have all the guys come back to do another dunk. At the end they crowned Guy Dupuy the winner of the contest. All of the guys are extremely talented and Guy did do some awesome dunks, the best dunk of the night goes to Young Hollywood.

After the dunk contest, the best street ballers from Los Angeles came out to play. It included players from Venice Beach League, Ball Up and more. Make sure to check out the footage and all the pictures!

Venice Beach League kicks off!

Summer time in Los Angeles is full of basketball everywhere you look. The Drew League, JBL, Say-No Classic, Real Run and more. I’ve been covering some of the JBL and the Drew League so far but I would like to introduce the Venice Beach League pictures now being added! The Venice Beach League, also known as the VBL, takes place at the iconic basketball courts located in the heart of Venice Beach, CA. The games will be every Sunday starting at Noon. The majority of the basketball games in Los Angeles are indoor, but this is true street ball at its finest. Along with the players frequently seen throughout the other LA summer leagues, the VBL has been known to attract some of the coolest guests – from NBA stars to street ball legends. The list includes everyone from Derrick Rose, Kobe Bryant, Blake Griffin, Dwayne Wade, The Bone Collector, Sick Wit It, G Smith, Zack Andrews and more! The pictures are courtesy of Emarie Marie!
