Drew League Week 02 – Saturday

The first week of the 41st season of the Drew League was a success. Today, the second week of the Drew League continued with more excitement. College, High School and NBA players still can not participate until later on in the summer, but the action was very intense! NBA Veteran, Baron Davis, started off the day by scoring 31 points to lead Cheaters to a 76 -68 victory. La Familia brought out a large crowd today as they took on Hard Times. Anyone who saw last weeks game knew that it went down to a game winner within seconds of time expiring. Today, a very similar situation happened – Milk Harris and Frank Session came through to save their team at the end, winning by 2 points. There were also some interesting characters that showed up around the Drew League today – you’ll have to check out the pictures to see what went on! Check back Sunday for continued Week 02 action and check out the pictures below

Lost Footage: Off Season workout – Paul George vs Nick Young

Throughout the summer time, I travel all around filming and taking pictures of some of the greatest basketball talent in the world. Before this website, I didn’t have the proper outlet to display it to everyone. Now, I will be posting exclusively on cassyathena.com my “Lost Footage” – footage that I have shot and never posted. Stay tuned for more exciting behind-the-scenes action.

To start it off, I took some footage of Paul George and Nick Young during an offseason workout. It includes drills, dunks, and a game with Nick vs Paul. Check out the video below!

“Hollywood Divas” spotted at Exclusive Burlesque Show

Last night on the rooftop of 3100 Wilshire Blvd, Elise Neal hosted a Burlesque show along with her cast-mates for the new reality show, Hollywood Divas. The other “Divas” were in attendance as well. The lounge was the perfect setting to showcase talent on a stage for all to see. The show was hosted by the lovely Kym Whitley (She was making us all cry of laughter!). The show included everything from a Burlesque show, Pole Dance routine and lots of singing and dancing. The amazing Echoing Soundz staff was running things as well! Stay tuned for their new show coming soon, but in the mean time check out the photos from the event!

Drew League Fashion: Week 01

I‘m introducing a new section to spice up the Drew League photography I have – I’ll be including posts every week displaying fashion around the Drew League – From Athletes, to staff and more!

This year the Drew League revealed a new design for their jerseys – Each team had the opportunity to chose a team color. The “home” jerseys say “Drew League” in the front, while the “away” jerseys say the team name. The Game’s team, La Familia, has a jersey set unique to any other team. So far we have only seen one color way – a black jersey with gold writing saying “La Familia”. Once their alternative jerseys are revealed, I’ll be sure to post a picture of those as well. Aside from the variety of jerseys, you can find a unique style of fashion, from head to toe. Sneakers are one of the biggest expressions at these games – seeing what “heat” these players will bring out is always a surprise.

My favorite mix is the return of the “Drew Crew” shirts. During the 2011 season, the drew league staff members would rock the “Drew Crew” shirts. This year, with Nike in the mix, they created a new design for these shirts for the staff to wear.

Because this is the first post, it will just be a teaser – next week we will come full force with even more content, so stay tuned!

Drew League: Week 01 Action Continues

Sunday was an ever bigger day for the opening weekend at the Drew League. Bobby Brown made his return this summer, but this time playing with Kings of LA. In a surprising twist of events, he received a double technical for a charge and was ejected from the game. Everyone was in doubt because it didn’t look questionable enough to be an ejection. Either way, he left the game early on. Shortly after, their coach was also ejected from frustration. Kings of LA came up short their first game, losing by 31.

The next game was the introduction of The Game’s team, La Familia, playing against Tradition. The gym was packed full of fans that came out to watch them play. As they went head on against Tradition, it seemed they were going to come up short their first game. Ryan Walton for Tradition was playing incredible, leaving anyone who tried to stop him unsuccessful. With seconds left on the clock, La Familia was down by 1. Franklin Session from La Familia took a step back jumper for 2, putting them in the lead. Tradition was not able to recover and La Familia won their first game of the season in a very close and exciting game!

Throughout the day other teams took the court, including the return of COA and Craig Smith. NBA All Star DeMar DeRozan and Ed Davis made their way to the gym to support and watch the games. The 2-time Drew League champions, LAUNFD,  changed their name to The Clozers, winning their first game by 4. To see all the final game scores, you can check on the drew league website.

It was an exciting opening weekend at The Drew League and it promises to bring even more excitement and action in the following weeks. Make sure to stop by and check out a game!

Drew League is back! Week 01

Summer basketball has officially started. The Drew League kicks off its 41st year. If you don’t know about the Drew League, they are the number 1 summer Pro-Am basketball league in the world – located in the heart of Los Angeles. This is my 4th year as their photographer. Saturday was a good opening day – great basketball and lots of familiar faces. High School superstar Stanley Johnson made his Drew League debut playing for a new team, Sole Clinics. He had an amazing performance! Nick Young (LA Lakers) came out to support his team M.H.P. Baron Davis played early on with Cheaters, while JaVale McGee was coaching his team early in the morning.

The defending champions, The Blazers, were presented with a championship banner hanging up in the gym before their game.

For those that do not know, the NBA does not allow their players to play in any summer league activities until their contracts are over for the season, so you can expect to see NBA guys playing after July 1st. For now, you can catch them hanging out and supporting their friends and family!

If you missed the excitment today, be sure to come out on Sunday. Rap superstar The Game will be playing with his new team, “La Familia”. He will also be coaching “The Robinhood Project” team. Make sure you come out early because it will be packed! To see schedules and scores, check out www.drewleague.com
